besides boundaries: for which other objects do you think they should
not be connected? gates and highways? fences and gates? fences and
landuse/leisure? If a fence is the border of a park, I do want it to
share nodes, the rest follows as described above.

integrity. IMHO it is the strength of OSM in respect to GIS that we do
not have layers. Layers do structure the data in a different way that
tags do: tags allow to structure as you like in the processing of the
data, while layers force you to divide the data while mapping.
