I just wanted to clear that up, since you said "switch on some
javascript [...] that invites a percentage of signups" and "online
screen capturing software".
It sounds like that should actually be "switch it on for some
percentage of new signups if the user is using Windows" and "a
Windows-only screen capturing software". "Online" to me suggested that
it was some web-app. Otherwise you'd get confused users that aren't
using Windows searching for some client for their OS that doesn't
exist.
Anyway, from reading about usertesting.com it seems it just makes the
process of submitting screen recordings more streamlined, so a
"better" cross platform version would be to invite non-Windows users
to record their desktop and upload a video to some video sharing site
as they complete the tasks you're going to hand out to them.
