Speaking as an OS X user rather than any of you hardcore Ubuntu types - I've
never downloaded a planet file. Ever. Country extracts are fine for me and,
I suspect, for 99% of people. And loading it into a db isn't that nasty: I
kind of regret the fact that the UK is now too big for ye olde planet-to-sql
Perl script, and would much prefer a graphical UI to do the job, but Osmosis
works well enough.
