What, in your mind, is "the real equator"?

The Karlsruhe Zoo, not far from where I live, has a brass marking for 
the 49th parallel but your GPS will show that you're still 140 metres 
away from it when you stand on the line - that's because the marking has 
been erected with reference to the Bessel ellipsoid and not the WGS84 one.

Does that mean the brass line is a "sham" or a "lie"? No, it's just a 
pleasant reminder that there is more to Geodesy than just reading 
numbers off a device, be it "military" or "civilian".
