as Hurricane said, preliminary stuff is done; SOTM is listed on the
US State Department's intranet. Consular officials considering Visa
applications will be able to look SOTM up.

the US chapter of OSMF will provide invitation letters and supporting
documentation to all who request them.

for countries in the visa waiver program (most (all?) of the EU,
Japan, South Korea, Australia, others, see link below) visas
are not required, but an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel
Authorization) is.
