Thanks Greg as well as the few others that have replied to me privately,
Just to clarify (so others don't need to reply on that):
I do know of the OSM-Garmin coversion tools as well as the ready-made
downloads that are available from various places. My personal BIG thanks in
this regard goes to Geofabrik for offering the Garmin files (which have
navigated me from PaP to the Eastern tip of Hispanola and more locally) as
well as the other Haiti downloads!
An interesting idea to try to work through Haitian government / UN / etc to
get Garmin's specs albeit I don't really see why Garmin would respond
positively to such requests. What would be in it for them?
Regarding getting working GPS-navigation devices to use in Haiti vs. trying
to create a business out of it (whether that be for private profit or for
some social good as I'm hoping this could turn out); I don't see that there
must be at odds with each other necessarily. In my experience providing a
service in Haiti is difficult enough by itself that if/when someone is able
to do it that business is "protected" by the mere fact that you have are
able to deliver that service.
Anyways. Thanks for the responses. It seems like Greg's reply condenses the
situation.
Cheers,
-Jaakko
