The RFC is from 2009, IMHO there is an established alternative for this:
foot=designated
bicycle=designated
horse=designated

You count 24000 uses of designation=*

but
foot=designated has already 145 922 uses
bicycle=designated is used 99 418 times.

do we really need a duplication in designation? Or is there some
details that I don't get?
