There seems to have been a similar effort for canals.

The original import was apparently dumped in without regard to OSM's
structure.
The fixup changeset added "waterway=canal" and the somewhat redundant:

attribution=NHD
canal=fixme
fixme=canal/ditch attributes missing
source=NHD

However the desired attribute is not in NHD as far as I can tell.  That NHD
feature code is "feature only no attributes"....
so anyone trying to track that feature code down and add attributes will
hit a wall.
