The term trunk goes back long before OSM, they date back to The Trunk Roads Act 1936.

On the ground trunk roads are denoted by green signs and are mostly A roads, but there are exceptions such as a B road linking the trunk A6 to the M6 near Shap.

Other A roads have white signs.
