you can adjust the sensitivity in the mac preferences, I bet there's some software around that lets you create different mouse profiles for different applications. It might also be a matter of setting the acceleration to suitable values.

PS: you can get a logitech mouse for 6-9€, it's a lightweight, ergonomic, robust swiss product and from my experience more reliable than apple's overpriced magic stuff, plus they have a cable which makes them completely insusceptible to battery or bluetooth problems. Just plug it and it works ;-)
