Yes, obviously that is always the best option when possible. But tell
that to all the mappers who re-create buildings that show up in images
although they have meanwhile been demolished or who put a lot of effort
into correcting the course of rivers which have completely changed in
the years since the image was taken. Capture date metadata does not
prevent such mistakes but it can help avoiding them.
This is ultimately more a convenience thing. Usually it is possible to
pinpoint approximately when an image was taken if you put enough effort
into it - likewise for the DigitalGlobe images which have no recording
date information at all. But this is time-consuming work.
