[OSM-talk] from Allan Mustard regarding the OSMF survey

Thanks, Klaus,

I'd love to do that...I am not a software developer so don't have a clue
as to how to integrate that into LimeSurvey.  Perhaps you could video
conference with me so we could discuss--I would not know where to begin,
and don't want to do something that cripples the survey in the middle of
it!  LimeSurvey doesn't have a built in list of countries--we
looked--but it does have the map function so the best we could do with
the built-in capability was to ask respondents to click anywhere in
their countries of residence, since the country is all we really want.
LimeSurvey collects those lat-long coordinates, and Jean-Marc has built
a reverse geocoder so we can turn the coordinates into the name of the
country.

Now, what you propose would be great to incorporate into future surveys,
and I would be very keen to work on that with you.  Not having to
convert lat-long coordinates would be a relief.

Regarding creating a table of participants for mass mailings, we can
only do that with Foundation members, not with the general public--there
are some legal issues in certain countries.  We examined the idea of
emailing Foundation members, but were concerned that this could lead to
selection bias. We are thus publicizing the survey through social media,
the talk lists, and whatever networks we can reach.  I have posted a
notice on the main page of the wiki, in the calendar, and we have
submitted a pull request for a banner on osm.org.  I ask that everybody
continue to help publicize the survey.  It is especially important to
publicize it in other languages than English, in communications channels
local communities use.

Please PM me if you're willing to video conference with me about your
idea--I'd like to pursue it.

cheers,
apm
