As I pointed out in my response to Yves this is not about not improving 
and reinventing software, it is about the endless fragmentation of 
fragmentation of fragmentation that is going on, resulting in the long 
run in essentially everything except iD being unviable as a supported 
and maintained project.

Now and then you have to start afresh when there are actually good 
reasons and in a planned fashion, OSM did that with iD, but the examples 
(with such reasons) are rare. OSM itself filled a niche or perhaps 
better bundled and directed many independent efforts of a similar nature 
to a more general project, it invented something new, not something that 
already existed in that form.
