By the way - is there a public archive available for any of the OSM related IRC channels (or for any other OSM related real time communication channels FWIW)?
For me the availability of an immutable public archive is probably the most important criterion for a communication channel to be functionally useful. It ensures a common basis and reference regarding the historical facts of communication - which is pretty much essential for a functional and meaningful communication. As the saying goes: Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it.
