In every instance I'm aware of, it was either by mistake and quickly 
restored, or because the Wikidata item was insufficiently tagged and 
indistinguishable from spam. The admins there are pretty reasonable 
about restoring items when asked to.

NSI has since developed a mechanism for automatically tagging the 
Wikidata item with the fact that it's being used in NSI and thus worthy 
of inclusion. If Wikidata were used to store defaults in a 
machine-readable format, similar measures could be implemented to avoid 
surprises.
