Dear John,

Thank you for your question - we very much appreciate your input.

For the purpose of this survey we are interested in automated edits as per the OSM Wiki's definition; "Automated edits and semi-automated edits (sometimes called mechanical edits) are changes made to OpenStreetMap content with no or very limited human oversight, including those made by bots, algorithmic processes, imports and also major changes made using general-purpose map editing tools such as JOSM."

Therefore I would consider the suggestions as offered by JOSM as out of scope for the study. The import of open data also falls within this area of interest.

I hope this clarifies our intention. Thank you again for your input.

Best,

Niels

For the purposes of the survey could you define an automated edit please.

JOSM for example makes suggestions in the validator. One might be area=yes is unnecessary on a building=yes.

Would accepting JOSM's suggestion to fix the error meet your definition?

Does any import of open data meet your definition?

Sometimes knowing the subject matter and having clear definitions before a survey can assist in the accuracy.

Many thanks

Cheerio John

Dear members of the OSM community,

We are a group of researchers from the Human-Centred Computing Group of Aalborg University, Denmark. The OpenStreetMap project provides an example of a highly collaborative and distributed community working towards a common goal. As such, this makes the OSM project a highly suitable place to study to better understand the needs of online collaboration.

In our current study, we are interested in the collaboration between human contributors and bots/automated edits, and what can be done to further improve this interaction. We realise this is a highly contentious topic within the OSM community, and we would therefore love to hear from a broad representation of OSM contributors.

We are running a short survey - which should take roughly five to ten minutes of your time. We'd greatly appreciate any input you can provide. No personal information will be collected, and we will share our insights with the OSM community. If you wish to enter the raffle for a $25 Amazon voucher, you can leave your email address at the end of the survey.

Our survey can be found here: https://csaau.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8iUBOKYj8G6sLYy.

Best regards,

Niels
