Fully agree.
There is also another artificial obstacle originating from the database
- (semi) live rendering. Things would be a lot easier if we could drop
this requirement and import the database from daily snapshots. This
database should be heavily optimized for rendering anyway, with
non-rendered features removed, more aggressive pre-processing etc.
To the user, a one day old map would be perfectly adequate - all
commercial alternatives are far worse than that and it doesn't seem to
hinder them much.
Of course I am not advocating removing the live version but it could be
limited to logged in users only and focused more on mapping feedback.
