[OSM-talk] Stricter tile usage policy just introduced?

... to follow up on this, the student encountering problems is doing this from a localhost server on his home network, whereas normally requests from the university would go through a caching proxy to cut down on the number of requests to the tile server.

I am wondering whether this is a factor.

Thanks,
Nick

Subject: Stricter tile usage policy just introduced?

Hi,

For the last several years I have been using the OSM tile server for teaching purposes; according to my understanding of the tile usage policy this is low-volume, non-production usage (for students to develop assignments) and therefore OK. Certainly students have not encountered any problems previously.

However one student has reported getting a 418 error (I'm a teapot) with a web app, and, in his words has barely used the tile server at all.

Has there been a tightening-up of the usage policy to prohibit even low volume use of the tile server? Reading the policy it still states: "Heavy use (e.g. distributing an app that uses tiles from openstreetmap.org) is forbidden without prior permission from the Operations Working Group<https://wiki.osmfoundation.org/wiki/Operations_Working_Group>. See below for alternatives."

Apologies if I have been mis-interpreting the usage policy but just wondered if there have been any very recent changes.

Thanks,
Nick
