[Tile-serving] High renderd memory consumption ?

Hi,

I upgraded my rendering toolchain 2 days ago, along with a system upgrade to
wheezy, and last version of mod_tile on github (I was running a ~2year old
version before that)

After 1 or 2 hours renderd is eating more memory than the 8Go I've got and is
killed my the linux kernel.

I tried downgrading mod_tile/renderd to a version in the past (february 2012)
and it now works without consuming that much memory (around 500MB)

I checked on another server I have access to, also running a more recent
renderd and it also consume around 10GB of memory

Is it a known and expected behaviour of new feature in renderd (Am I the only
one to have that) ? If yes, is there some memory cache tuning or config
parameter I could change to reduce that for "low memory machines" ?

I tried to change MAX_CONNECTIONS and QUEUE_MAX in render_config.h but it
doesn't to change the memory consumption
