^^ that indicates your machine does not have enough memory. You need at least 1- 1.5 GB to build mapnik.

But really you don't need to build mapnik yourself at all. Follow the advice of Sven and just do:

sudo apt-get install libmapnik-dev

Then go back and build mod_tile.
