To be precise this is a change to renderd, not mod_tile.

Code like this has been in tirex since 2010 and does not seem to work
there that perfect as well:

metatilehandler.cc:
...
if(mMap.buffer_size() < 128)
    mMap.set_buffer_size(128);
...

Thus our German style does still have a labeling problem on some places:
