I back-ported b792a60785764259be6371be507d24455d2d3562 a6ddaed4a533202e5fe51668d0f3fd67fdd0d72a 4fc0b850c95e320306342f73805f10abf844225c

I'll run through tests, but I think the #419 fix warrants getting a 0.88.1 version out that fixes the bug, and everything applied cleanly.
