It might be useful to know a bit more about what you're trying to do here...
Are you trying to import the whole planet or an extract? What options
are you using for osm2pgsql (or whatever else you're using to load)?
What database schema are you using - something to render from, or a
different one? Is updating the database afterwards with changes
important? Have you tried a smaller data extract, or does the problem
occur no matter how little data you try and load? Do you have an option
(such as with a virtual machine) to easily allocate more memory to it?
The OS and version of osm2pgsql might be useful to know too.
I'm guessing that you've already had a look around and found discussion
such as:

With a few more specifics someone might be able to offer more concrete
suggestions (such as in the answer to that question) that are more
helpful than "import less" and "add more memory" :)
