Don't follow wiki entries for osm2pgsql setup.
https://github.com/openstreetmap/osm2pgsql#usage contains osm2pgsql
usage information, and a more comprehensive explanation including
installing software is https://switch2osm.org/loading-osm-data/

Any guide which is designed for PostgreSQL 8.4 or 9.0, PostGIS 1.5, or
osm2pgsql 0.81.0 should be removed. These are outdated and will mislead
people.

PostGIS 2.1 is recommended with osm2pgsql. 2.0 works without any known
issues. 2.2 Trunk is supported, but not tested.

We try to keep osm2pgsql working with PostGIS 1.5, but you should
consider 1.5 depreciated and the PostGIS project does not support it.

http://trac.osgeo.org/postgis/wiki/UsersWikiPostgreSQLPostGIS is also
worth a review. PostgreSQL 9.0 has an end of life date of September 2015.

9.3 fixes some bugs with large index query planning, so I strongly
recommend it for any application involving OSM data.
