I managed to resolve my issue by adding swap to the machine (16G, to match RAM). Thank you @ImreSamu for the suggestion. Not sure why it was configured by default, but from now on I'll know to check. Apparently there is quite a large memory usage spike during relation processing.
@mboeringa Thanks for the info. I did change to using --flat-nodes. It finished the load in ~26 hours. My instance does have SSD. I had just assumed that any cache was better than none.
