I'm not sure. Based on similar failure modes and the comments the threads linked above, I assumed my previous attempts failed due to some kind memory constraint on the client. When I used a 64GB machine, I ran all the same commands as my earlier attempts except with `--cache 35000`. While the command was running I ran `htop` and saw totally memory usage around 45-50GB, iirc.

I am not sure. I just had whatever the default is on ec2 instances. Literally the only commands I ran were those listed in https://github.com/openstreetmap/osm2pgsql/issues/930#issuecomment-490649475, then downloading the planet file from s3, and then the import command in OP.
