Go ahead and leave it closed.  The explanation of the misbehaviour was that I was examining with a different set of tables than I was updating, because I'd neglected to change the table prefix in the Lua script when I changed it on the command line. Slim tables were going to one place and highway tables to another (see #1345 for a suggestion at mistake-proofing).
