Once it is working well (there's a timeout that is causing me a problem at
the moment) then I plan to extend it to allow more complex queries like:
[place=city|town|village and population>1000] etc.

What's the charset?  Firefox seems to find it hard to decide how to display

Firefox just likes to munge the URL - probably some anti-phishing
functionality.  The server handles it ok however it gets munged.
