Thanks for the info, but you are a day late. :-)

I investigated it yesterday while my wife was buried in Harry Potter and came to the same conclusion. The culprit was php4-mysql missing. Given that I want to transition the site to php5 in the long run anyway. I installed it and -lo and behold- things seem to work fine. The regularly run munin and request timeout scripts run locally now. So does the Upload/Run/index.php script which processes all uploaded tilesets. I checked the logs to make sure they work fine.

It would be great the try the whole shebang using php5 at some point to see if things break horribly and switch the site over if not.
