In fact, fading the background may be a trivial operation - you just
need to apply the following styles to the image:
img.faded {
filter:alpha(opacity=50);
-moz-opacity:.50;
opacity:.50;
}
(different versions of different browsers support their own extensions
to CSS to support opacity - the three above should cover most browsers
in current use).
