Once space is getting too tight the maplint layer could be moved to a
different server. To distribute one layer across servers is certainly
more complicated.
A tile server would actually be pretty simple. Besides a web server
to serve the tiles it needs a script that stores the tiles in the
right location and a default handler for missing tiles that looks them
up in the db. This setup should not require many changes over time
and be therefore pretty stable.
