I have 3.5GB of RAM and haven't noticed any heavy swapping yet (but haven't

The default layer of the tile I was rendering when I was writing my original
mail
eventually finished, but the maplint layer was stuck for hours on 0%
rendering,
so after a day or so I aborted it. (which actually took a kill -9)
