I am not extremely familiar with the client code, but the perl error can come up for any reason if something went wrong in the previously. If there is no resulting PNG from inkscape which can them be split in tiles by perl, you will see that error message.
AFAIK, the client should never crash or stop working. It's supposed to (in loop mode) pick the next tile in the queue and continue that. So if it crashes that is definitely a bug.
Error handling (and reporting) is the weakest area in the t at h client right now (besides the darned inscape crashes and takes down its own preferences file which will prevent all subsequent renders from succeeeding).
