None of the current developers seems willing to invest the additional effort of maintaining a trunk/branch and do the merging, all have expressed that they rather see a client break once in a while and be able to quickly make changes on the positive side.
But what you propose is possible already today and does not require the current developers at all. SOmebody who wants a stable branch should jsut copy over the trunk into a _stable directory and merge changes from the trunk once in a while. I am sure not only Windows users would appreciate something like this. ALl that it takes is someone who is bothered enough to take action.
