DOHH! THe client checked for a reply containing "Invalid username" 
and I was sending back "Invalid Username". I have fixed this now, and failed authentication will be shown as just that.

I just tried my shortname in authentication.conf and that worked (after the account had been created once). However, I wouldn't really recommend it.
