I didn't change config.defaults:

PNGnq = pngnq
PngQuantizer = pngnq

png is installed:

tiles at alice:~/tilesAtHome$ type pngnq
pngnq is hashed (/usr/bin/pngnq)

tiles at alice:~/tilesAtHome$ pngnq -V 2>&1
pngnq (null)
   Compiled with libpng 1.2.15beta5; using libpng 1.2.27.
   Compiled with zlib 1.2.3.3; using zlib 1.2.3.3.
