Hi,

Just an idea but why do you think about using existing hardware for core
functionnality and dispatch the last step 'serving' the tiles to
contributors like community members and private company.

For my own work I manage 2 tiles server, one for the 'mapnik' tiles and
one for the 'osmarender' tiles. These two servers are :

* http://tile.quiedeville.org
* http://tah.quiedeville.org

with the same path/files structure than the *.openstreetmap.org server.
Theses servers fetch the desired tile once a day and cache them for
24hour max.

So why not dispatch the serving step to some off server like mine by dns
round robin or using a.tah.openstreetmap.org, b.tah, ....
It's easy to set up, just define letter.tah. a CNAME and easy to come
back if you want.

I'll be very happy to share my hardware and to serve the OSM project.
