The main OSM server tile updates based on mapnik only happen weekly.

Osmarender updates of an area can happen within 5-10 minutes.
(Currently, the number is at about an hour and a half: this is
unfortunate, and I'm working on solving that problem.) 

Regardless of anything else, when working in an area, to have a
reasonable idea of what some content that I've added to OSM will look
like *while I'm editing* is extremely valuable to me, and if it's not
valuable to you, that's fine, but for me, it's very valuable.

No need to be convinced. If you don't feel the need to run a client,
then don't.
