Thanks for your help.
I uninstalled 5.8.8
and installed perl activeperl 5.10

Unfortunately the application won't start
due to a missing perl58.dll file...

Something to do with tilesgen  line 12 load GD ???

which version of Activestate perl are you running? I've a client running under 
WinXP, and changing to v.5 10 solved that problem for me.
