I've followed this discussion and think a live generated POI layer
based on user selected keys sounds great. 

I still feel that there is a case for pubs (and petrol stations) to
appear as icons only (without name) at z16 as they are landmarks
that people often seem to quote when giving verbal directions on how
to find somewhere. But I'll wait for now to see what happens
regarding a POI layer.
