This is as expected and what it has done previously. Now, just
instead of creating a zip file it creates a tileset file after that.

I'm afraid that's the only way (aside from injecting them into a tile
server). The format is documented at
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Tiles%40home/Tileset_as_one_file
Writing a script would be a good idea, though.
