All good stuff, but is this really required permanently with the files? Why not some temporary log file (or log db) that is rotated and deleted after 14 days.
2kb of metainfo * 16mio = 32GB * 4 layers = 128GB disk space for additional metainfo * 2 (Raid 1) = 256GB *more* disk.
OK, I exaggerate somewhat, but these are the dimensions we work with.
