Ah, so there is such a thing? Are there also conventions on where jars
and the java executable live in relation to this?

I didn't know java had an environment variable that was supposed to
tell it where java lives (if that's what it does, I can't find any
sensible documentation on this), or I would have made Batik.pm look
there already.
