Let's be careful about doing things just because other (less clever)
maps do them. We already have one example of this, in the linear scale
- just as I have no need for miles on the linear scale, I also don't
need to see both Praha and Prague on the map. A much better solution,
IMHO, is to focus on ways of allowing easy switching between favoured
languages as you later allude to.
I'm not saying that there are never reasons to show two names for one
location (Beijing/Peking, Mumbai/Bombay?) but by and large I'd see our
job to be to provide enough smarts to present the most suitable single
name to each user having regard to language preferences.
