I belive this posting was intended for josm-dev? Allowing people to use 
arbitrary projections in t at h could lead to, er, funny results ;-)

My current knowledge is that there is no full-featured Java port of 
proj.4 (the existing port does not do ellipsoid conversion which, to me, 
would seem to rule out using any projection not WGS84 based and thus be 
of no interest to us), so we would have to do JNI to proj.4 proper which 
I sort of dislike.
