Most font problems I've seen have been people who haven't had DejaVu
installed.
Adding a good fallback font for the stuff not covered by dejavu sounds
like a good idea.
However it still leaves the problem of knowing if the font is
installed, I see two possible solutions to this:
One would be to write a check that looks in the same places as
inkscape and batik and checks that all required fonts are there,
however i think this might easily become quite the mess, especially
when you add all kinds of different platforms.
The other would be to use SVG fonts, see this trac ticket for some
