i'm using inkscape... actually i'm using the T at H image provided for 
download in the T at H wiki
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Virtual_Tiles@Home_-_Ubuntu
i.e., the somewhat older ubuntu 9.04 with deb+svn updates.
