I've just set up a wiki page on that topic based on different
mailing list postings
http://www.openstreetmap.org/wiki/index.php/Labels
and a dictionary

as far as i understand this page:
http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/British-road-numbering-scheme
"A roads" are almost the same as "B# roads" (Bundestraße) in Germany
but the A/B/C/D classification is based on traffic density
while the B/L/K in Germany or N/D in France mainly shows who's
responsible for the road and the length of the road.
The B/L/K and N/D classification says nothing about the street type
(can be a city street, one lane, wide two lane or motorway like)
Shouldn't that be an extra label or just a second name for the street?
