Perhaps a new API version is a good moment to introduce way grouping. It's
much too complicated to put all segments of a road that spans large parts
of a country into a single way, especially if the surroundings are already
crowded with other segments or if several parts of the way are created by
different persons at different times.

On a motorway, ways could be created for each direction from exit to exit
and then grouped together.

If that meta-way can include other meta-ways, some other interesting
things are possible (all motorways of a country grouped together,
coastlines, ...) that will save a lot of cpu cycles for certain
applications. But maybe that's better placed in 0.5 API ;)
