The Float object in Ruby is actually a double..
"Float objects represent real numbers using the native architecture's double-precision floating point representation."

Subject: [Openstreetmap-dev] Server is truncating lat/lon values?
Hi,
I have the strong evidence that the server is rounding my uploaded lat/lon
values... >:-)
Is it possible, that values are rounded somewhere in the import process?
What is the precision of latitude and longitude values? 32-bit-float? Or
64-bit-double?
Ciao, Imi.
